Gentrification is a process associated with urban renewal. It involves new groups of wealthy people moving into poor neighbourhoods, that often have dilapidated housing, and renovating the houses. The poor neighbourhoods are usually in inner city areas and were once the homes of industrial workers who worked in nearby factories and warehouses or on wharves, and sometimes on the railways, or in power stations.

Gentrification often involves the transformation of neighbourhoods into areas with more parks and public gardens, the development of playgrounds for children, and the conversion of old commercial premises into restaurants, and a variety of specialist shops providing high quality goods.
